NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Buyer's Guide
Positioning and generation
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti is a desktop graphics card built on the Maxwell architecture. In our ranking it sits in the Entry Gaming tier band, level with the GTX 1070 and just below the GTX 1660 Super and GTX 1660 Ti. By today's standards it is an older generation, but it can still be useful for games whose official requirements only call for minimum or recommended hardware.
Think of this card as one that runs a good number of games, though not as a first choice for new releases. As official requirements climb and start assuming newer architectures or feature support, it will struggle more. If your goal is to play new titles smoothly for years, it is not a strong main card, but for mid-range requirements it still has a place.
Key specs explained
The card carries 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory on a 384-bit memory bus. Video memory capacity determines how many textures and scene assets the card can hold at once. Six gigabytes is generally enough for most games at 1080p, but in newer large titles, pushing texture settings high can create capacity pressure. The bus width governs how quickly data moves, and 384 bits was a wide design for its time, which helps explain why the card still has headroom at higher resolutions.
The card does not support ray tracing, and it has no DLSS, NVIDIA's AI upscaling technology. Upscalers render at a lower internal resolution and scale the image up to the output resolution, trading some sharpness for performance. Without that support, games that depend on DLSS to reach their recommended tier, or that require ray tracing, will not give you those options on this card.
Suitable games and resolutions
Our database holds 439 catalogue games with official requirements. Of those, 419 could be resolved for this card. It reaches the recommended tier or better in 100 games, only the minimum tier in 124, and sits well above the recommended tier in 181. Another 14 games fall below the minimum requirement and will not run properly. These counts come from comparing official requirements, not from any measured testing.
Titles that reach the recommended tier include Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) 40th Anniversary Edition, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, Mewgenics and Digimon Story Time Stranger. Games that only meet the minimum tier include Big Ambitions, Scrap Mechanic and DragonSword : Awakening. Titles below the minimum include Gothic 1 Remake, SILENT HILL f and DOOM: The Dark Ages, so expectations should be adjusted for those.
For resolution, 1080p is the sensible target for this card. Aiming for 1440p means accepting more settings reductions and sticking to less demanding games.
Compared with similar hardware
In our ranking the GTX 980 Ti is level with the GTX 1070, so the two are close in position, and the choice often comes down to used prices in your area. It sits just below the GTX 1660 Super and the GTX 1660 Ti, which are newer architectures and usually offer advantages in features and power efficiency.
At the lower end, the RTX 3050 6GB and the GTX 1660 are both entry-level options. The RTX 3050 6GB is slightly below the GTX 980 Ti, and the GTX 1660 sits a little lower still. The RTX 3050 Laptop GPU is a laptop part at a lower tier and should not be treated as directly equivalent to a desktop GTX 980 Ti.
Buying new or used
If you are considering this card, first confirm that your power supply has enough capacity and the required 8-pin or 6-pin power connectors. Its power draw was on the high side for its era, so a quality PSU is advisable. Check case clearance as well: make sure the card's length fits and review the cooler design and airflow.
When buying used, be aware that a card of this age may have been run for mining or under sustained heavy load. Fan wear, dried-out thermal paste and dust buildup all affect temperatures and stability. Inspect the card physically and test it in a working system before paying. If you find a new unit, check the warranty length and terms, though since this is an older model, stock and warranty availability may be limited, so confirm with the seller.
Upgrade advice
If you own a GTX 980 Ti and find that games regularly fall short of their recommended requirements, an upgrade is usually a sensible step. Options to look at are the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56, the Intel Arc A580 and the GTX 1080. In our ranking each of these sits a clear tier above this card and belongs to an equal or newer generation.
When upgrading the graphics card, also consider the processor and memory balance. An older CPU or a small amount of RAM can cap the gains you get from a faster GPU. Check that your processor and memory can keep up with a new card before deciding on the order of upgrades and how to split your budget.
