ASTRONEER PC Hardware Guide
Official requirements explained
The official minimum for ASTRONEER is a dual-core x64 CPU running at 2 GHz or higher, a discrete non-mobile GPU with 1 GB of memory, 4 GB of RAM and 2 GB of storage. The recommended level raises this to a quad-core x64 CPU at 3 GHz or higher, a discrete non-mobile GPU with 2 GB of memory, 8 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage.
According to our reference table, the minimum CPU is roughly comparable to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, and the recommended CPU is close to an Intel Core i3-3220. Both are old entry-level parts, so the bar to start the game is low. The publisher only lists GPU categories and memory amounts without naming specific models, so we cannot place the GPU requirement in a specific generation.
The gap between minimum and recommended is mostly about core count, clock speed and memory. At the minimum level the game runs, but the CPU and RAM will feel tight once your base and automation grow. Meeting the recommended level gives more room for large builds. The official listing does not require an SSD, which is covered in the storage section below.
Recommended builds for three budgets
The three builds below cover entry, mainstream and high budgets, and every part comes from our candidate list. The entry build suits players on older hardware or tight budgets. GPU choices range from the RX 5600 XT and Arc A580 to the RTX 3060 8GB, and CPUs run from the Ryzen 3 3100 to the Core i5-10400F. We suggest at least 16 GB of RAM to leave room for the operating system and larger worlds.
The mainstream build is for players who want smooth play and a system that can handle newer games. GPUs include mid-range cards from the RTX 3060 Ti up to the RTX 4060 Ti, and CPUs such as the Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i5-10400. Again, 16 GB of RAM is the suggested minimum. This setup has clear headroom above the recommended level and suits long sessions with big bases.
The high build is for players who want the best quality or run other demanding games alongside this one. GPUs range from the RTX 4070 Ti and RX 7900 GRE to the RTX 4080 Super, with CPUs like the Core i5-12400, Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 8700G. For ASTRONEER this is far beyond the recommended level, so the extra performance is mostly for future titles, and 32 GB of RAM makes sense here.
Graphics settings with the biggest impact
ASTRONEER centers on terrain deformation and many interactive objects. In a game like this, shadows, volumetric lighting and particle effects usually cost the most, because they change with the terrain and with the number of objects on screen. Shadow quality and view distance are often the most noticeable settings, so start them at medium and raise them gradually. Volumetric lighting and ambient occlusion help the look but are heavy on the GPU, so enable them based on your card.
Ray tracing is not a core part of this game, so it is rarely worth sacrificing other settings for it. If your GPU supports upscaling such as DLSS, FSR or XeSS, enabling it generally reduces GPU load with a modest loss in image quality, though results depend on the card and setting, so test it yourself.
In general, begin with a medium or high preset and then adjust shadows, view distance and effects one at a time. The official listing does not provide per-setting details, so these suggestions are based on common practice for similar games.
Laptops and handheld PCs
Laptop GPUs often share names with desktop cards, such as an RTX 4060 laptop version versus a desktop version, but power limits and cooling differ a lot, so real performance is usually lower. When judging a laptop, check its power configuration and cooling design rather than the name alone. ASTRONEER is not demanding, and most mid-range laptops from recent years can meet the recommended level, but keep them cooled and plugged in for long sessions.
Handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck or ROG Ally are portable platforms that generally run the game at lower settings with some scaling. We do not have Steam Deck verification data, so we cannot give a specific compatibility verdict. As a general rule, use the built-in performance mode and lower shadows and effects.
Storage and memory
The official storage figure is 4 GB recommended and 2 GB minimum, but leave extra room for updates and save files. For memory, the official minimum is 4 GB and the recommended is 8 GB. Our candidate builds use 16 GB or more, ideally in dual-channel configuration so data moves more smoothly between the CPU and GPU.
The official listing does not require a solid-state drive, so a traditional hard drive will work. An SSD does noticeably shorten load and read times, which helps if you travel across regions often. Install the game on a drive with plenty of free space so updates and saves do not run into trouble.
