Mafia: Definitive Edition PC Hardware Guide
Official requirements explained
The official minimum CPU is an Intel Core i5-2550K at 3.4GHz or an AMD FX-8120 at 3.1GHz. In FrameScope's tier system that puts it in the entry or very-old band, roughly a decade-old quad-core. The minimum GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870, also a very early entry-level card. The minimum asks for 6GB of RAM and 50GB of storage, and does not require an SSD.
The recommended tier lists an Intel Core i7-3770 at 3.4GHz or an AMD FX-8350 at 4.2GHz, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 5700, and 16GB of RAM. On our tier scale the GTX 1080 sits in the mainstream 1080p band, and the i7-3770 is an older mainstream CPU. The gap between minimum and recommended is large, mostly in GPU generation and RAM. If your PC only meets the minimum, the game should run, but you will need to accept lower settings and less stability headroom.
The publisher did not list requirements for higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4K, so any expectations at those settings are your own judgment rather than something the official data covers.
Recommended builds for three budgets
The entry build suits players who want a stable 1080p experience on a tight budget. It pairs a GTX 1650 Super with a Core i3-10100F and 16GB of RAM. The goal is to clear the official recommended tier comfortably at 1080p, without chasing high-end settings.
The mainstream build is for players who want a more relaxed 1080p experience with higher settings. Options include an RTX 2060, RX 5700, RTX 3060 or RX 6600, paired with a Ryzen 5 3600 or similar, plus 16GB of RAM. This tier clearly exceeds the recommended requirements and should handle most of the game at good quality.
The high-end build is for players who want higher settings or higher resolutions. It uses an RTX 3080 10GB with a Ryzen 5 5600X and 32GB of RAM, which gives room for mods, recording and multitasking. The main benefit is headroom, so you can push settings without worrying about running short.
Graphics settings with the biggest impact
In an open-city story game like this, the settings that usually cost the most are shadows, volumetric fog and lighting, the density of crowds and props, and view distance. Shadows and volumetrics are especially heavy in dense urban scenes, so these are the first things to adjust. Texture quality mainly uses VRAM, so as long as your graphics card has enough memory you can usually keep it high.
Ray tracing is generally expensive, and if your card is not from a recent generation it is best left off. Anti-aliasing and post-processing effects are mostly a matter of taste and can be balanced once you know your frame-time comfort.
If your card supports DLSS, FSR or XeSS, upscaling is a general way to trade a small amount of image detail for smoother play. How well it works depends on your hardware and chosen settings, so compare the options yourself and keep whichever looks acceptable to you.
Laptops and handheld PCs
Laptop graphics cards often differ from the desktop part that shares their name. Laptop versions are typically limited by power and cooling, so real performance can fall well below the desktop card. When checking requirements against a laptop, look at the specific model's power configuration rather than only the name. Long sessions under load can also trigger throttling if cooling is poor, so keep vents clear and run on mains power for steady performance.
Handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck or ROG Ally are full PC platforms, but their power and thermal headroom is limited. Running a demanding game usually means lowering resolution and graphics settings and aiming for a modest frame-rate target. FrameScope has no verification data for this game on handhelds, so treat this as general guidance and judge by your own device and settings.
Storage and memory
The official minimum asks for 6GB of RAM and the recommended tier asks for 16GB. Current operating systems and background software already use a good amount of memory, so 16GB is a practical starting point, and 32GB gives more room if you run mods or keep other programs open. Make sure your memory is installed in dual-channel configuration so you get the expected bandwidth.
Storage needs at least 50GB, and the official data does not require an SSD. An SSD still noticeably shortens load times and makes moving through the open city smoother, so it is worth using one if your budget allows. Also leave extra free space for updates and temporary files, so installs and patches do not fail because the drive is full.
