AMD FX-4300 Buyer's Guide
Positioning and generation
The AMD FX-4300 is a desktop processor from AMD's Piledriver generation, and today it sits in our very old / entry level tier. In practice that means it is aimed at lighter games and everyday use rather than being a main choice for newer, demanding titles.
It has four cores and four threads and no integrated graphics, so you need a dedicated graphics card to get any picture. Compared with newer architectures, its single-core performance falls well behind, and games with heavy processing needs will feel strained on it.
Key specs explained
The specifications we hold are the core and thread count, the generation, the desktop form factor, and the fact that there is no integrated graphics. Four cores and four threads means the processor can run four independent workloads at once. Games that spread lots of background work across cores, such as physics, large crowds of AI characters or complex world loading, will hit that limit quickly.
Because the thread count equals the core count, the chip has no simultaneous multithreading, so it cannot split each core into two threads the way many newer processors do. The lack of integrated graphics also means you cannot fall back on the motherboard's video output if your graphics card fails. We have no other specification details to share for this processor.
Suitable games and resolutions
Against official requirements, 416 of the 439 games in our catalogue with published requirements can be compared. Of those, 231 sit below the processor's level, 102 only reach the minimum requirement, 65 reach the recommended requirement, and 18 are well above the recommended requirement.
Titles that reach the recommended tier include Timberborn, Peglin, Nine Sols, The Planet Crafter and Blasphemous 2. Games that only reach the minimum tier include Hollow Knight: Silksong and Fields of Mistria. Demanding titles such as Big Ambitions and Scrap Mechanic fall beyond what this processor can comfortably handle.
For resolution, 1080p is the sensible target for this chip. Raising the resolution mostly adds load to the graphics card and does nothing to ease the processor's own computing limit, so set your expectations around lighter or older games.
Compared with similar hardware
In our ranking, the neighbours just above the FX-4300 are the Intel Core i3-3220, the Intel Core i5-2300 and the AMD FX-6300, with the FX-6300 sitting a little higher. The neighbours just below are the Intel Core i7-920, the Intel Core i3-2100 and the Intel Core i5-750, which rank slightly lower.
The FX-4300 is in the same band as the Core i3-3220 and Core i5-2300, so when choosing among them, price, motherboard availability and your other needs are the deciding factors. Against the FX-6300, which ranks higher, the FX-6300 is the better pick if your budget allows it.
Buying new or used
This processor uses the AM3+ socket, so make sure any motherboard you buy supports AM3+. New AM3+ boards are now uncommon, so check their availability and price before committing to a build.
The pins are on the CPU itself, so check them for bends when installing it or buying it used.
Its multiplier is unlocked, so it can be overclocked on a motherboard that supports overclocking.
When buying used, inspect the processor for physical damage, ask the seller for proof of purchase, and confirm the warranty status. We have no further details on firmware or motherboard updates, so confirm compatibility with the motherboard maker before you buy.
Upgrade advice
If you are running this processor and games already feel too slow, a processor upgrade can make sense. Based on our data, the upgrade targets worth considering are the AMD FX-8350, the Intel Core i5-2500K and the Intel Core i5-3470, all of which rank clearly above the FX-4300.
When upgrading, keep the graphics card and memory in balance. If the graphics card is already the bottleneck, a new processor will add little, and too little memory will hold back performance in the same way. Review the whole system before deciding what to upgrade first and by how much.
