Intel Core i7-6700K Buyer's Guide
Positioning and generation
The Intel Core i7-6700K sits in the older mainstream tier. It is a 6th Gen Core desktop processor built on the Skylake architecture. With 4 cores and 8 threads, it still handles a good number of games today, but it is no longer the choice for a new build.
This chip includes integrated graphics, so it can display a picture and run basic tasks without a dedicated graphics card. For gaming, though, you should pair it with a dedicated card. If your goal is a long-lived gaming machine, it makes more sense as a holdover for an existing platform than as a fresh investment.
Key specs explained
Four cores and eight threads are enough for most games. Core count becomes a limit in newer titles that also run heavy background work. The thread count lets the system juggle more tasks at once, which helps if you stream, record, or keep many programs open alongside a game.
The Skylake architecture and 6th Gen positioning mean older single-thread performance and memory support compared with current chips. The platform also has limited compatibility with newer motherboards, so check the board specs carefully.
The integrated graphics keep the PC usable if your graphics card fails or is out of stock, but they are far weaker than a dedicated card and should not be your main gaming display source.
Suitable games and resolutions
Against official requirements, this processor can be matched against 439 catalogue games that publish requirements. It reaches 416 of them. Of those, 35 are below the official minimum, 104 meet only the minimum, 151 meet the recommended tier, and 126 are well above the recommended tier. Overall it has a usable base for most moderately demanding games, but it becomes tight with the most demanding titles.
Games that clear the recommended tier include Big Ambitions, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) 40th Anniversary Edition, MECCHA CHAMELEON, Timberborn, Farthest Frontier, Dispatch, Shape of Dreams, and SCUM. Titles that only meet the minimum include Yet Another Zombie Survivors, IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator, Fields of Mistria, Big Walk, Gothic 1 Remake, and LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Those below the minimum include Scrap Mechanic, DragonSword : Awakening, Palworld, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, shapez 2 - Factory, and Windrose.
For resolution, 1080p is the sensible target. If you want higher resolutions, the processor is rarely the only bottleneck. The graphics card carries more of the load, so choose your target resolution based on the card.
Compared with similar hardware
Close in tier and slightly above are the AMD Ryzen 7 1700, Intel Core i7-6800K, and Intel Core i7-7700, with the i7-7700 placed a little higher. Close in tier and slightly below are the Intel Core i5-7600K, Intel Core i3-9100F, and AMD Ryzen 5 1600X.
Against the same-generation Ryzen 7 1700 or i7-6800K, the differences come down to core configuration and platform support, so decide based on the motherboard and peripherals you need. Compared with the i5-7600K or i3-9100F, the i7-6700K usually has a clearer edge in multi-threaded work, though how much that matters depends on the game.
Buying new or used
This processor uses the LGA1151 socket. Before buying, confirm the motherboard supports it. It is a launch-generation chip for this socket, and older boards may not work smoothly with it, so check the motherboard's compatibility list before purchase.
The boxed version does not include a cooler, so you need to buy one separately. Its pins are in the motherboard socket rather than on the CPU, so take care not to touch the socket contacts during installation. Its multiplier is unlocked, so it can be overclocked on a motherboard that supports overclocking.
If you buy used, check for physical damage and ask for proof of purchase and the warranty status. For new units, buying from a reputable retailer protects your warranty and after-sales support.
Upgrade advice
If you are on something older, moving to this chip usually brings a noticeable improvement. If you already run a chip at this level, the case for upgrading depends on the games you play. Only consider replacing it if your favourite titles are demanding on the processor.
Upgrade targets worth looking at are the AMD Ryzen 3 3300X, AMD Ryzen 7 2700, and Intel Core i5-9600K. These sit clearly higher in tier and are newer generations. A new processor may also mean a new motherboard, so weigh the total cost.
Keep the graphics card and memory in balance as well. If the graphics card is already the bottleneck, a processor upgrade gains you little, and insufficient memory will hurt the overall experience regardless of the chip.
