Intel Core i5-3470 Buyer's Guide
Positioning and generation
The Intel Core i5-3470 is a 3rd Gen desktop processor. In FrameScope's ranking it sits in the very old / entry level band, which means it is aging and suits basic gaming and everyday tasks rather than demanding modern titles. It has 4 cores and 4 threads with no simultaneous multithreading, so its headroom is limited by today's standards.
The chip includes integrated graphics, so it can output a picture without a dedicated graphics card. That is enough for booting, browsing, video playback and office work. Integrated graphics are not suited to demanding games, so a separate graphics card is still needed for that.
Overall, this processor makes most sense for keeping an older PC running or as a stopgap on a very tight budget. It is not a good foundation for a new gaming build.
Key specs explained
The specifications we hold are 4 cores, 4 threads and integrated graphics. Core count determines how many tasks the chip can handle at once. Four cores is low for current games, and some newer titles will show the processor as a bottleneck. Four threads means there is no extra simultaneous multithreading, so there is less room for multitasking.
The integrated graphics let the system display a picture without a discrete card, but they only cover light workloads. For gaming, the dedicated graphics card's video memory (VRAM) and core performance matter far more than the CPU's built-in graphics.
Other specifications such as clock speed, cache size and power draw are not listed in our data, so they are not covered here.
Suitable games and resolutions
Across the 439 catalogued games with official requirements, 416 can be assessed for this processor. Of those, 150 fall below the official minimum, 126 only meet the minimum, 120 meet the recommended tier, and 20 sit well above the recommended tier. In practice, roughly a third of the games cannot reach the minimum, and about three in ten reach the recommended level.
Titles that meet the recommended tier include Paralives, Timberborn, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Dokimon Quest, Age of Mythology: Retold, Peglin, 7 Days to Die and Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic. These are mostly simulation, strategy or lighter indie games. Titles that only reach the minimum include Fields of Mistria, Farthest Frontier and BALL x PIT, while Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) 40th Anniversary Edition and Big Ambitions fall below the minimum.
For resolution, 1080p is the sensible target. If the graphics card is modest, lowering graphics settings is the practical way to keep games running smoothly. Higher resolutions put far more strain on the graphics card than on the CPU, so pairing this processor with a high-resolution display will not bring much benefit.
Compared with similar hardware
In FrameScope's ranking, the Core i5-3470 sits in the same band as the AMD FX-8350 and Intel Core i5-2500K. These three are close in position and are only useful as reference points for older systems.
One step lower are the AMD FX-8320, Intel Core i3-4130 and Intel Core i5-2400. The i3-4130 and i5-2400 are weaker for games again.
One step higher is the Intel Core i5-3570K, which ranks above the i5-3470. If you are only comparing within the same generation, the 3570K is the closest higher-tier reference, although this page does not recommend it as an upgrade.
Buying new or used
Before buying, confirm that the motherboard uses the LGA1155 socket, since this processor only works with that socket. The chip uses a land grid design: the pins are in the motherboard socket, so take care not to touch them when installing it.
The multiplier is locked, so it cannot be manually overclocked. Our data does not state whether a boxed cooler is included, so check the packaging yourself and plan on a suitable cooling solution.
If you are considering a used unit, check it for physical damage and ask the seller for proof of purchase and the warranty status. Because this is an older generation, LGA1155 motherboards are increasingly hard to find and may not be supported by newer software, so pay close attention to compatibility.
Upgrade advice
If you are still running a Core i5-3470, upgrading is worth considering. If your budget allows, look at the AMD Ryzen 3 1300X, Intel Core i5-4690K or Intel Core i5-6400. All three rank clearly above this processor and should give a noticeable gain in gaming.
Be aware that changing the CPU usually means checking motherboard compatibility, and a different socket generally means replacing the motherboard too. Balance the upgrade against your graphics card and memory: a weak graphics card will limit a new CPU, and too little RAM will hold back performance as well.
If the main bottleneck is the graphics card, upgrading that first is usually more effective than replacing the processor.
